What is a Screw Pump (Snake Pump)?

Also known as a “screw pump” or “single-shaft screw pump,” it is a positive displacement rotary pump. In theory, it can handle liquids up to 1,000,000 cP and can transfer semi-solid materials without causing damage. It is also highly precise in volumetric delivery and is characterized by having no pulsation.

Inside a sealed casing, a screw rotates to move the liquid along the screw axis. The wetted parts consist of a rotor (male screw) and a stator (female screw). As the rotor turns inside the stator, it generates strong suction while transferring fluid containing solids to the discharge side.

This pump is particularly suitable for transferring high-viscosity liquids.

Additionally, because it can deliver high-viscosity liquids without pulsation, it is widely used in applications that require precise volumetric flow.

How is it different from a Mohno Pump®?

The pump known as a Snake Pump (or single-shaft eccentric screw pump) was invented by Dr. Mohno in France and is commonly referred to as a “Mohno Pump” internationally.

However, in Japan, the trademark “Mohno Pump” is owned by Heishin Equipment Co., Ltd., so the name cannot be used freely. As a result, terms like “single-shaft screw pump” or “screw pump” are used in Japan to refer to the same type of pump.

In terms of transfer principle, they are identical; the only difference lies in the naming.

Features of the Snake Pump
The Snake Pump has three main features.

Capable of Transferring Low-Flow Fluids

  • Can transfer low-flow fluids such as miso.
  • Can theoretically handle viscosities up to 1,000,000 cP.

Capable of Transferring Semi-Solid Materials

  • Can transfer fluids containing solids and fibers.
  • Can also transfer liquids containing air bubbles.

Accurate Volumetric Transfer Without Changing Fluid Properties

  • High volumetric accuracy due to positive displacement transfer.
  • Transfers fluid without agitation and with no pulsation.

Applications of the Snake Pump

The Snake Pump is used in a wide range of industries, from food and cosmetics to chemical applications, depending on the fluid type:

Low-Viscosity Fluids:
Sauces, noodle soup base, soy milk, bittern, milk, soy sauce, sake, juices, beverages, wine, syrups, jelly liquids, lotions, paints, etc.
These are typically used in environments requiring strict sanitary conditions, such as food and cosmetic production.

High-Viscosity Fluids:
Starch syrup, red bean paste, jam, starch paste, butter, brewing yeast, creams, toothpaste, honey, mayonnaise, ketchup, nori paste, cosmetic creams, lipstick, ointments, adhesives, etc.
These pumps are also widely used in chemical applications, including adhesives.

Corrosive Fluids:
Caustic soda, solvent-containing fluids, sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite, pulp solutions, coating colors, surfactants, etc.

As shown above, the Snake Pump is a highly versatile pump suitable for a wide variety of applications.
